Art Houses of Marin
Ritter Center has launched a public art project to raise awareness about the challenges faced by homeless and low-income families in Marin. These objects of public art have been placed in communities all across the county so families can find them in a treasure-hunt-like atmosphere. The houses (the one shown at right is by Mill Valley artist Eric Zener) will be auctioned off at a gala event on May 1, 2010, at the exclusive hilltop estate of the Santa family, owners of Woodlands Market, in the Kent Woodlands area of Ross. For tickets call 415.457.8182, ext.106, or visit rittercenter.org

By Artists for Artists
In a county full of artists here’s an artisan who has created a great tool: the Ric Easel. Billed as the world’s first rotating portable easel, Sausalito resident Richard Morton’s three-pound tabletop easel is made from sustainable hardwood and can turn from almost vertical to 25 degrees. Morton also teaches painting classes with a live model and furniture restoration classes. 415.331.1451, rickproductions.com

Award-winning Wake-up
It’s been a good year for San Rafael’s Equator Estate Coffees. The all-women-run business just received Roast magazine’s 2010 Roaster of the Year award and is the newest addition to GoCoffeeGo, a site selling goods from artisan roasters across the country. gocoffeego.com

One-of-a-Kind: Peter Pan
After a 6,000-mile journey from London, on April 27 the new staging of Peter Pan at Ferry Park on the Embarcadero in S.F. will take place in a one-of-a-kind 100-foot-tall 360-degree CGI theater tent. Buy tickets early, as the Bay Area has the only West Coast engagement for the show. peterpantheshow.com

Green Summer
If your kids have been lucky enough to take part in Mill Valley resident Julie Hanft’s nature awareness afterschool program called GreenPlay, you know her Sustainable Summer Camp will fill up fast. The completely outdoor camp features restoration projects, recycled art projects and eco-minded guest speakers. Weeklong sessions start June 14. $200 for half day, $300 for full day per week; various locations in Marin. 415.264.2828, maringreenplay.com

At the Bay Area Discovery Museum’s annual Playdate Gala, May 8, Sausalito resident Chuck Slaughter will be awarded the Discovery Prize for his support of the museum’s outreach program Connections. The Discovery Prize acknowledges those who have made a significant contribution to enrich the lives of children and families.

High-five to Marin Supervisor Charles McGlashan! The Southern Marin Fire Protection District is recognizing McGlashan for his leadership and support of the Southern Marin Fire District with the award of excellence at the fire department’s first fundraiser, Fire & Ice Ball, on April 3.

Fish2Fork, a website dedicated to rating restaurants based on their menu’s impact on marine life, launched its online seafood guide. Congrats to Larkspur local Yankee Pier for making the list of conscientious restaurants for its use of sustainable fish. fish2fork.com, yankeepier.com
