Celebrate Earth Day the Marin Way

Earth Day Week is upon us in all of its planet-appreciating glory, and you might be wondering how exactly to get involved. Fortunately, My Earth Day Marin takes the guesswork out of the equation, providing do-gooders with a bevy of options to help improve the world, starting in our shared backyard.

The My Earth Day Marin Coalition — founded in 2008 to improve county conditions through a variety of service projects throughout the county — is comprised of Marin County Parks and Open Space District, the City of San Rafael Volunteer Program, the Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership of Marin and the Marin County Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program. The majority of volunteer opportunities will take place on Saturday, April 26.  Here’s a brief sampling of options, with plenty more listed online.

North: Join Marin County Parks and WildCare in an effort to spruce up Stafford Lake through litter patrol and habitat restoration.  9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Stafford Lake Park (Novato)

Central: Enjoy a free kayak or SUP rental on one condition — participants must pick up trash, which is often carried through drains into the bay, as they paddle. 9 a.m. to noon, 101 Surf Sports (San Rafael).

South: Help eradicate the invasive broom that has overtaken Horse Hill. Your work will be well worth it, as volunteers are invited to take part in a pizza party and raffle post-pulling. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Horse Hill (Mill Valley).

West: Turn your love for nature into a creative endeavor as community members, artists and visitors partake in the 10th annual Create-With-Nature Celebration at Stinson Beach, where sculptures and other works are crafted from rocks, sand, driftwood and more. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Stinson Beach (Stinson).
