Help Houston Survive Hurricane Harvey

Imagine having to flee your home, leaving behind all your prized possessions, having maybe just enough time to grab important paperwork and knowing you’ll likely never get to return and see your things again. This is what hundreds of thousands of residents in Houston and the surrounding area are facing right now. Hurricane Harvey has been wreaking damage in Texas for nearly a week, with Houston bearing the brunt of the damage. To put things in context, downtown San Francisco has had 32.34 inches of rain since October 1 of last year until now, while Hurricane Harvey has brought up to 30 inches of rain to some parts of Houston since Thursday. Not only that, but sustained winds of Hurricane Harvey at landfall in nearby Rockport, Texas, on August 25 reached speeds of 130 miles per hour.

Tragically for the citizens, the city is flooding, there are currently no organized evacuation efforts and opportunistic scum of the earth are gouging people at their lowest, attempting to turn a profit in the midst of a crisis by selling much needed water at a jaw-dropping price of $42 a case. These facts coupled with the troublesome images making their way to us from the site of the disaster, including those of seniors waist deep in water inside a nursing home, are heart-wrenching, disturbing and difficult to process.

But there are ways to help.

Many are rising to occasion, including famed Houston native Beyonce and the Kardashians, who donated half a million dollars to help with rescue efforts. Of course, any bit you can bear to contribute helps. For current Harvey coverage, visit Houstonia magazine and make a donation to one of these Houston-based charities on their donation page.
