Best of Broadway Under the Stars at Marin Center

The Big Apple boasts many things; from pizza and bagels, to museums and restaurants. And, of course, you can’t forget Broadway and the bevy of talented artists boasting big voices and big kicks. With all the bright lights in that big city, what would bring a Broadway performer from New York City to the Bay Area?

One Broadway artist shares his story of how he found himself travelling from one coast to the other, and what brought him here.

Tony Gonzales appeared on Broadway in the long-running production of Mamma Mia!

Tony has traveled across the country, and across the globe, performing with Mamma Mia! as well as the companies of Saturday Night Fever, Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Disney On Classic.

This March Tony, along with a host of artists from Broadway and beyond, is coming to Marin for a special limited-engagement performance of Best of Broadway Under the Stars with the award-winning Transcendence Theatre Company.

Keep reading to hear how Tony found himself here in the North Bay...

Tell us about yourself and your performing background in a nutshell.

Tony: My first choreographic endeavor and performance (that I can remember) was at the age of 8. I wore a black top hat, white shirt, red cummerbund and black slacks and danced a routine to Billy Joel’s "Uptown Girl". (I look forward to recreating that someday!) Since then, I have been singing and dancing through life on stages of all shapes and sizes. I have performed in almost all of the fifty U.S. states, Mexico, Canada, and most recently Japan.

What is one of your most thrilling performance career highlights?

Tony: Performing with some of my closest friends at Radio City Musical Hall at the Tony Awards in 2009. Liza Minnelli was sitting in the front row directly in front of me - I was crying and sweating and laughing and screaming with excitement!

What is one thing about performing on Broadway that people may not realize?

Tony: I don't believe many people understand that being a performer in New York and across the world is actually a job. Albeit a very cool job, it is work; especially a long running show. There are ups and downs and lows and highs just like any other job. Also, steady work is hard to find; there is no rest for the weary when it comes to this business. HUSTLE is constant and the fear of not having work is real.

What first brought you from Broadway to Transcendence Theatre Company here in the North Bay?

Tony: Amy Miller!! Amy, who is the Artistic Director of Transcendence, is one of my all-time favorite dance partners! We have danced together since the year 2000, and I hope to be dancing with her until the year 3000 and beyond. I remember the day (before Transcendence was even 'born') that Amy said "...wouldn't it be amazing if we could perform together with all our friends, all the time, in some gorgeous locale, and put on shows?!" And here we are doing it! How very cool!

What is it about Transcendence Theatre Company that keeps you coming back?

Tony: Every single person who lives in Sonoma, works with the company, performs on the stage, pours the wine, provides housing, sparks conversation at the gym... Every single person here has bright light to share, and it's rather addicting!

What about Best of Broadway Under the Stars are you most excited about?

Tony: I cannot wait to share this team of stars with a wider area of Northern California. I am especially ready to spread some serious joy through music and dance… See you there!!

Join Tony at Transcendence’s Best of Broadway Under the Stars at the Marin Center on March 18 & 19. This two-night only event is a spectacular celebration featuring over 20 performers from Broadway shows such as Wicked, Mamma Mia!, The Book Of Mormon, Mary Poppins, and many more.

This unforgettable evening of dynamic and powerful music and dance takes you on a thrilling journey of musical theatre classics, current Broadway hits, mash-ups, and popular chart-toppers that will have you dancing in your seat from beginning to end.
