Portuguese Fado Night at the Pines Mansion in Sausalito

Transport yourself to the ancient Alfama district of Lisbon, Portugal on Saturday, January 31, but in Sausalito’s old town where you will enjoy the captivating music of local fadistas – singing traditional Portuguese Fado.

Fado is a form of urban folk music in Portugal dating back to the 1800’s that is now considered the national song of Portugal. Fado singers, or fadistas as they are called, are usually accompanied by guitarists; they sing passionately about love, joy, sadness, pain, and hope. It is a dramatic genre and makes for a good show. Think Billie Holiday singing the blues, or a folksy operatic soprano/tenor and the angst of country western lyrics. No surprise that the word ‘fado” stems from the Latin word “fatum” (fate or destiny). They say that to truly understand Portuguese culture one needs to experience “Uma Noite do Fado” (A Night of Fado). This is your chance.

The Fado Night in Sausalito (January 31, at 6:30 p.m., cocktail attire please) will be staged at the historic Pines Mansion (built in 1888) where the ambiance of a “Clube de Fado” will be recreated in the large wine cellar of the beautiful estate. This extraordinary venue alone is worth the price of admission and should provide a truly transportive experience – taking you to a candle-lit cellar in the legendary Alfama.

In addition to the music (fadistas Marylou Lawrence and David Garcia with the Os Rouxinois guitarists) the evening will feature critically acclaimed Portuguese wines donated by Vini Portugal (Wines of Portugal) and a buffet of pesticos (Portuguese tapas). The art work of internationally recognized artist Joao de Brito will also be on display and auctioned.

The evening is a benefit for the Sausalito-Cascais Sister City Youth Sailing Exchange Program an international youth sailing exchange program with the Sausalito Yacht Club and Clube Naval Yacht Club in Cascais.

Student sailors from Cascais will visit Sausalito in July of this year and next year Sausalito Yacht Club youth sailors will travel to Cascais. It is the first international youth sailing exchange in the Bay Area and should be a delightful celebration of over 150 years of Portuguese-Azorean heritage in Sausalito.

For more information and tickets ($75 in advance; $85 at the door)  go to brownpapertickets.com.

Complimentary shuttle service will be provided from Sausalito City Hall & the top of Spencer Avenue; street parking is very limited.
