Enjoy the Best Books Ever Written Without Reading a Page
In downtown Sausalito, I just enjoyed the most captivating art exhibit by former Sausalito houseboat resident Stuart Sheldon. His show, “The Best Books Ever Written,” features the cover titles of literature's finest works and some of your childhood favorites. Notable authors include Bay Area luminaries such as Dave Eggers, Peggy Orenstein, Po Bronson and Anne Lamott. This painting and assemblage series was a Miami Herald pick of the week during Art Basel 2014. The show continues through May 31 at the Style A Gallery located on Princess Street in Sausalito and well worth the trip.
In these large-scale paintings, colorful book title covers swirl and dance around the title page of Sheldon's own just-finished memoir, A Lonely Fool's Masterpiece, to infuse it with their magic and make it one of the Best Books Ever Written. Says Scheeres, whose bestselling memoir, Jesus Land, is prominently featured in one of Sheldon's new works, “It’s surreal to see 'Jesus Land' transformed into something so visually striking. I hope Stuart’s history of magical art holds true for this piece as well."
This series represents the third in a trilogy of works designed to manifest things important to Sheldon. Previously, he painted a series entitled NOW designed to find a soul mate, and met his wife soon after. When the couple had trouble producing a child, he created the BOUNCE series, after three miscarriages their son arrived on the next attempt.
The new BEST BOOKS works are intended to ensure the successful publication of Sheldon's first book, A Lonely Fool’s Masterpiece, chronicling the parenthood journey from the male perspective. The author/artist explains, "These paintings find the sweet spot where visual and literary sensibilities lie together and unite to create something greater than themselves. They serve as my query letters to agents." Visit Sheldon’s website to learn more about the artist and Style A Gallery to see the art firsthand. You’re in for a treat!
