Inside Kohanaiki’s Private 67,000 Square Foot Clubhouse

Situated on 450 oceanfront acres on the Big Island of Hawai`i lies Kohanaiki, a private club community remarkably different from its predecessors, representing an evolution of the private club experience built around luxury, sustainability and world-class amenities. Its 1.5 miles of spectacular coastline comprises some of the best surf breaks, fishing and diving anywhere. The warm crystalline waters of the Pacific are in Kohanaiki’s backyard, offering year-round activities in and on the ocean. The community also features the only Rees Jones designed golf course in Hawai`i, an impressive Sports Complex with batting cages and tennis courts, and at the heart of Kohanaiki, the members-only 67,000-square-foot Clubhouse.

At less than a year old, the Clubhouse is one of the largest private clubhouses in the world.  Under its roof you will find an impressive array of unique amenities, starting with Kōnane, the club’s signature 120-seat open-air restaurant, and including a four-lane bowling alley, 21-seat movie theater complete with concession stand, a secret cigar and poker room found behind a hidden door and a private wine room that features a collection of 50 years of Chateau Mouton Rothschild bottles featuring custom labels by Picasso, Warhol and Dali. There truly is something for everyone within its walls.

Kohanaiki promotes an active lifestyle and as such the Clubhouse features an open fitness center with state of the art equipment and an expanse of ocean facing pocket doors that allow for fresh air and sweeping views of the Pacific that will motivate members to the very end of their workout.  Adjacent to the fitness center is the Tracy Lee designed spa which was inspired by the words “Aloha Aina” (The Love of the Land). These words are evident in the treatments which incorporate the philosophies of native Hawaiian healers and use of soothing oils and invigorating scrubs comprised of botanical ingredients grown on property and sourced locally.  Just past the lānai of the clubhouse and next to a grassy yoga lawn, you will find a west-facing 25-meter outdoor pool with panoramic vistas of the Pacific and one of the best places to catch a famous Hawaiian sunset.

If a round of golf at the club’s Rees Jones designed golf course is on your schedule for the day, be sure to start at the Member Shop overlooking the 18th hole.  In addition to everything golf, the 2,200-square-foot shop offers tennis gear, swimwear, men’s and women’s apparel, footwear and beach accessories. Members can also check in here to schedule a lesson with one of the club’s pros or have a drink on the spacious lānai while watching friends sink the final hole of their game.
