Caldwell Snyder Gallery presents Recent Paintings by Deladier Almeida. Deladier Almeida’s paintings meld organic forms with manmade order, using landscape as an armature over which to create intuitive, vigorous abstractions. Fascinated by aerial views of the countryside ever since the flight that first brought him from Sao Paulo, Brazil to California’s Central Valley decades ago, he is drawn toward the kind of altered terrain in which nature has been molded to human purposes, an effect he has called “a geometry of occupation.” Levees, fields, bodies of water, shadows, and reflections become recurring elements of a “language to tell a larger story.”

Almeida’s paintings combine careful composition with spontaneous action. His process begins with selecting and re-arranging photographs captured from flights on propeller planes and helicopters and sketching out full-scale studies in charcoal, and ends with him working quickly to create the final image in an electric, improvisational palette. “I have to attack it,” he has said of painting. “The more I think about it, the less vital, to me, it seems to turn. So I have to work on the edge of my rational mind.” As in the landscapes of Wayne Thiebaud, with whom Almeida studied, the resulting images subvert expected perspectives, colors, even temperatures and planes.

Almeida earned his degree in studio art at the University of California, Davis in 1990, after studying industrial design, architecture, and urban planning in Sao Paulo. He has exhibited his work at galleries, museums, and art fairs including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the John Natsoulas Center for the Arts in Davis, the Bennington Center for the Arts, Vermont, and others.
