The Furniture Society, the premier
educational organization focused on promoting excellence and fostering an
understanding of the art of furniture and its place in the world, will host its next
conference “NEXUS: Perspectives on Art, Design, Craftsmanship, and Technology“ at
Dogpatch Studios in San Francisco from June 14-16, 2018.
Created with designers, makers, artists, gallerists, collectors, design retailers and
students in mind, the conference explores what’s next for the community of makers
and collectors as the world becomes increasingly digital.
Through presentations, panels, interactive workshops, tours, and informal social
events, the conference brings together the country’s most visionary designers, artisans,
technologists, futurists, and entrepreneurs to illuminate, provoke, and inspire. Topics
cover a broad range of concerns including the role of women in the craft, technology
and design; sustainability; advanced materials; collaboration between designers and
makers; shifting consumption patterns; and global craft.
Featured speakers include artist/architect/designer Allan Wexler (capstone speaker)
and designer/builder/educator and founder of Project H Design and Girls Garage Emily
Pilloton (keynote presenter).
NEXUS will also feature three exhibits. NEXUS: The Exhibition, taking place at
ShopFloor Design in Dogpatch, is a juried exhibit of work by members of the Furniture
Society, including Justin Bailey, Chance Coalter, San Francisco’s Fyrn, The Krenov
School, Po Shun Leong, Marcus Papay of Papay Designs, and Jordan Waraksa of
Fiddle and Hammer. This exhibit is curated by Derek Chen of Council Design, Jennifer
Jones of Niche Interiors, independent curator Jennifer Navva-Milliken and independent
curator/art consultant Julie Muniz.
The second exhibit, entitled Thinking Through Making, takes place at CCA Hubbell
Street Galleries, features work by the students, faculty, and alumni from California
College of the Arts. The third exhibit, entitled RAW DESIGN features work by Dominic
Di Mare and Judy Kensley McKie, and is at the Museum of Craft and Design.
