Perhaps people seek out new places here out of boredom rather than a spirit of adventure, but how often can you hike the same trails? Point Reyes has its popular beaches and overlooks, and a trip to the headlands and the lighthouse is always a thrill.

Such a spectacular landscape as the Point Reyes National Seashore has an infinite variety of new vistas if you go to untrodden land. Locals know this, but keep their favorite spots to themselves - as it should be.

Photographers and painters have a different take of thistheir work is meant to be seen - otherwise why do it at all? They could look at something beautiful, say click, and not lift a finger - let alone a lens.

Image-making has a conservationist’s dilemma. Artists want to turn people on with their images, to inspire them to love and protect the parks. But will these supernatural places then be trampled by the hordes?

Education is the answer, and common sense. Otherwise, we let the Trumps of the world destroy our parks through greed and ignorance.

A collection of our photographs and paintings of our favorite places off the beaten trails will show during the month of February at Toby’s Gallery. Many of you know where these places are, but they are places that shouldn’t have a lot of careless usage, as they are wild and fragile.

Our solution is to not name them with their actual locations and, to make the show more fun, quiz the viewers: have them guess where they think these places are and where the photo was taken from or the site of the painting! Hence there is a test for those who want to take it.

Put your knowledge of Point Reyes to the test and try to I.D. these shots. Put the completed tests in the box in the gallery and we will grade them. Add your email on the sheet so we can send you your score. Yep, it’s a return to school!

The people with the best scores will receive a beautiful print absolutely free. And you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have the greatest knowledge of seldom-seen Point Reyes.
