Indian Valley Hike

It wasn’t until this school year that I began to appreciate nature for what it is. The Team program has given me the opportunity to hike all over Marin, backpack through the Sierras, Joshua Tree and eventually the Lost Coast. I have learned to use it as an escape and a place to enjoy my time with friends and family without distractions from our busy lives. However, the relationship between man and the outdoors is far from new. Since the beginning of mankind, people have been interacting with nature as a source of survival and enjoyment. Countless times my parents have told me about their childhoods playing almost entirely al fresco. It wasn’t until recently that kids have prioritized their screen time over the great outdoors. Recent studies are showing that spending time in nature could improve brain function exponentially. According to a study shown in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, after just a 90 minute walk in the outdoors, participants showed to be far less worried, obtain better focus, mood, and even test scores.

There are so many trails to explore in Marin, and this May Day, Marin County Parks is giving the chance for Marinites to get out into the Indian Valley in Novato to enjoy the spring wildflowers. Hikers meet in the parking lot at College of Marin Indian Valley Campus. Bring food, water, and binoculars if you have them.
