Environmental Education Council of Marin

Well before it was hip to be green, the Environmental Education Council of Marin (EECOM), a community-
inspired association of more than 130 local organizations, has been making it easy and cool to be
eco-friendly. Programs such as the Marin Food Systems Project, Teen Environmental Media Network and Sustainable Business Network have become platforms for the council’s staff, consultants and volunteers to work together to make a positive difference in the community. “EECOM has a small core staff but accomplishes a lot by working collaboratively and inspiring community action,” explains Catriona MacGregor Glazebrook, who joined EECOM as executive director in 2005.

One of EECOM’s latest projects is the Marin Community Green Action Alliance (MCGAA), an
effort to address global warming in our own backyard. Spearheaded by MacGregor Glazebrook, who was inspired by the “tremendous creativity, innovation and talent in Marin,” the alliance aims to reduce Marin’s ecological footprint by curbing excessive energy consumption. MCGAA, open to all Marin residents,
includes diverse groups like Sustainable Marin, Pax Scientific and Main Street Moms, who are now
embracing the issue of global warming with a passion.

EECOM will be hosting another community meeting this month at the Marin Art and Garden Center. To learn more, go to eecom.net.

Mimi Towle has been the editor of Marin Magazine for over a decade. She lived with her family in Sycamore Park and Strawberry and thoroughly enjoyed raising two daughters in the mayhem of Marin’s youth sports; soccer, swim, volleyball, ballet, hip hop, gymnastics and many many hours spent at Miwok Stables. Her community involvements include volunteering at her daughter’s schools, coaching soccer and volleyball (glorified snack mom), being on the board of both Richardson Bay Audubon Center. Currently residing on a floating home in Sausalito, she enjoys all water activity, including learning how to steer a 6-person canoe for the Tamalpais Outrigger Canoe Club. Born and raised in Hawaii, her fondness for the islands has on occasion made its way into the pages of the magazine.
