California Academy of Sciences’ Spring Forward Science Soiree

Better Makers, Cal Academy

On April 22, the 168-year-old California Academy of Sciences once again showed its resiliency after a tough year of museum building closures, plus its deep dedication to science by raising a whopping one million dollars to support both its world-class facility in Golden Gate Park as well as its global research and science education programs.

During the event, the Academy’s executive director, Dr. Scott Sampson, unveiled the Academy’s new mission to regenerate the natural world through science, learning and collaboration. Several scientists, including Dr. Rebecca Albright and Dr. Brian Fisher, presented talks and videos to show the non-profit’s many game-changing initiatives to save coral reefs, preserve endangered species, stop deforestation and explore uncharted oceans.

Although it is well known in the scientific community here and abroad for its work in environmental science studies and fostering partnerships with other research organizations, the Academy is less known by the general public for the work it has done in conservation and species survival, among other research and education programs. The new mission is aimed at bringing those initiatives to the forefront.

There was also a virtual afterparty immediately following, featuring lively entertainment by Canadian electrofunk duo Chromeo, sand artist Anna Strelkova and juggler Jeremiah Johnston. Elizabeth Patterson, the Academy’s board chair, attended and generously donated during the paddle-raising portion of the program, which culminated in more than $200,000 during the evening including matching grants from sponsor Autodesk. Other event sponsors included Carmel Partners, Deloitte, JP Morgan Chase, Pisces Foundationand Visa.
