How to Celebrate Memorial Day During a Pandemic

Given that Memorial Day is a day to honor those who died for our freedom, it’s a novel experience to celebrate it while mostly confined in our homes — so this one deserves a special tradition. In light of this, American Veterans (AMVETS), a volunteer-led organization formed by World War II veterans of the United States military, has resurrected and updated a beloved event.

Rolling Thunder, now Rolling to Remember, is a nationwide virtual challenge that advocates for the 82,000 soldiers missing in action and raises awareness about the fact that 22 veterans a day are lost to suicide. While the event was originally held as a community ride in D.C., it has undergone changes that have made virtual participation possible — and broadened the scope of it. Motorcycle riders across the U.S. are challenged to ride 22 miles in their home communities over Memorial Day weekend to support this cause. If you have a metal steed, you can sign up here and track your ride through this app. Whether or not you ride, you can make a donation on their website and sign their petition here.

Of course the holiday has morphed and is now known largely as the unofficial beginning of summer and the start of barbecue season. With that in mind, here are some other ways to celebrate the holiday, including a virtual ceremony honoring the fallen, various special meal options and more.
