On Sept. 7, thousands of adventurous spirits made their way to the top of Mount Tamalpais for Sound Summit — the annual community gathering high above San Francisco Bay known for its winning combination of vibrant music, good vibes and breathtaking views.
This year’s festive crowd was treated to a stellar lineup featuring indie-rock icons Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile & The Violators and retro-soul ensemble The California Honeydrops.
18-year-old guitar sensation Grace Bowers & The Hodge Podge, and the genre-defying Bay Area artist, Skyway Man, also graced the stage.
Andy Cabic of Vetiver fame spun records under the September sun and kept the groove going throughout the day. The festival also welcomed the return of beloved emcees Murph & Mac (Brian Murphy and Paul McCaffrey), alongside KPFA’s “Dead to the World” radio host Tim Lynch. Fans ended the day with a sunset descent that, as always, never fails to impress and leave everyone with the sense that they’ve truly been somewhere special.
Sound Summit, produced by Roots & Branches Conservancy which is helmed by Marin local Michael Nash, has raised over $250,000 from event proceeds to date for a range of resonant projects on Mount Tam, from trail restorations and public access to fire prevention, water conservation and more. When she’s not writing, trekking up steep hills in Marin or driving her kid to sports practice, she and her family spend time in their tiny cabin in Lake Tahoe. She avidly supports the California Academy of Sciences, a world class science museum and research institution, and the Institute on Aging which provides much needed services to Bay Area seniors and disabled adults. Glass is obsessed with baking the perfect loaf of banana bread, something she makes so often she no longer needs to look at a recipe card.
