See the West Coast Premiere of the Mystery that Thrilled Broadway: “The Sound Inside”

Sound Inside

A brilliant Ivy League writing professor. A talented yet mysterious student. An unthinkable favor. Everyone has a story — the question is how it ends. Penned by Pulitzer Prize finalist Adam Rapp (Red Light Winter), “The Sound Inside” takes you behind the ivy-covered walls of Yale, and into New York’s literary haven, Greenwich Village, in a riveting new American play.

The Sound Inside” captivated Broadway audiences in 2019, capturing a Tony Award nomination for Best Play. A taut, literate thriller, this drama draws the audience into a dawning relationship built on secrets, and keeps you hanging on until the final surprise.

Critics rave about “The Sound Inside”; The New York Times  called it “subliminal, sublime…a play about fiction, both the kind we read and the kind we live.” The Hollywood Reporter lauded the play’s elegant language and finely drawn suspense, calling it “rivetingly theatrical” and “profoundly affecting.” They went on to say: “Rapp creates an enigmatic puzzle out of the very personal story Bella [the writing professor] is crafting and the one written by Christopher [her student], which also contains dark hints of autobiography embedded in its mounting dread. As their tales converge, their physical paths separate, and Rapp taps into themes of tragedy and redemption, sacrifice and loss, the bright blaze of artistic creation and the sadness of an unknowable stranger. Key elements of the story remain veiled in mystery, ambiguity, or fueled by impeccably controlled suspense, but the undercurrent, particularly in the final scenes, swells with genuine emotion… ‘Listen to the sound inside,’ Bella scribbles over and over on a legal pad during a class writing exercise, the words floating in the air…. It’s precisely what Rapp has done with his characters in this quiet stunner of a play, and what they in turn ask of us.”
