Just Eat It is a provocative, award-winning film that addresses the issue of food waste. After realizing that billions of dollars of good food gets tossed out each year (40 percent of all edible food in the U.S. is wasted), filmmakers and food lovers Jenny Rustemeyer and Grant Baldwin pledged to quit grocery shopping and survive only on food that would otherwise be thrown away. Their film, Just Eat It, presents an educational and entertaining chronicle of their experience and insights into both food waste and food recovery – on farms, in supermarkets, at restaurant tables, and in our own refrigerators.
Following the film, Doug McConnell of Bay Area Backroads and OpenRoad on NBC-TV, who is also a longtime Marin environmentalist, will moderate a panel discussion with local leaders including Congressman Jared Huffman. Proceeds from the evening will benefit ExtraFood (ExtraFood.org) a nonprofit dedicated to helping end hunger and food waste in Marin County. Most people don’t realize that huge quantities of healthy, fresh food are wasted in Marin County every day while nearly 50,000 people in the same county do not have a steady supply of food – including as many as 12,000 seniors and more than 12,000 children.
