Jersey Boys

I had the pleasure of watching "Jersey Boys" from orchestra seats at the Curran Theater last night.

I admit I am somewhat of a musical theater junkie, but I am not of the baby boomer generation, so I appreciated the jukebox musical from a slightly disconnected standpoint. That said, the performances were collectively amazing and certainly enough to keep me entertained until the end.

"Jersey Boys" is a documentary-style portrayal of the rise, and eventual fall, of 1960's rock group Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. The show is literally divided into four seasons, or sections, each of which is narrated from the perspective of one of the four band members. Every featured actor boasts a set of enviable pipes, and use their talents to sing classics like "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," and "Walk Like a Man." There is even a cameo (of sorts, obviously) by The Angels, an all-female group who mix it up with a fun performance of "My Boyfriend's Back."

This show is worth seeing for the vocals alone, but for those who grew up with the musical stylings of Frankie Valli, I would say get to the theater ASAP. I can only imagine the sort of nostalgia that bubbles up when you see such an iconic group brought back to life by such talented performers. And although entertaining, it's also honest—after all, the play was conceptualized by former band member and songwriter Bob Gaudio, who, along with Bob Crewe, is also in charge of the muscial elements of the show.

If you're looking for a pitch-perfect night out, head to the Curran while you still can! The Jersey Boys will be in town through April 28.
