Ninth Annual Sausalito Gingerbread House Tour

The Cavallo Point Gingerbread House on display in their main lobby: Cavallo won “Best Team Effort” in the Ninth Annual Gingerbread House Competition.

Twenty businesses participated in what has become a much anticipated holiday tradition in Sausalito –– the annual Gingerbread House Competition and Tour. There were no rules, parameters or construction guidelines this year so creativity could run wild and it did in some instances. Some gingerbread homes are traditional, some are huge and some are small, some are quite culinary and some don’t even involve gingerbread! But they are all delightful and a great way to get into the spirit of the season.

Download a Gingerbread House map at or pick one up at participating merchants and take a walking tour of all the installations. Seeking out all the gingerbread houses is a great excuse to stroll the festive streets of Sausalito, shop the boutiques for your holiday gifts and eat and drink along the way. Personally, I am a fan of the drink and shop program: buy a gift, have a drink, repeat. You can sneak a peek at the Gingerbread houses along the way and it makes the shopping all the more manageable, especially since you’re spared the madness of mall shopping. But do plan to Uber home (!) if those “drinks” aren’t just spiced apple cider or hot chocolate….

This year’s Gingerbread House winners are: Napa Valley Burger Company for “Best Sausalito Theme,” Sausalito Optometry for “Best Craftsmanship,” Osteria Divino for “Most Creative,” Pick Me Up Chocolate for “Most Traditional” and Cavallo Point for “Best of Team Effort”. You have see them yourself to believe them, so I’m not going to say more.

The many variations of gingerbread homes will be on display through the end of the month. And while the judges have announced their winners, you can still vote for People’s Choice. So bundle up and walk the brightly decorated streets to enjoy Sausalito at its finest, most wonderful time of year – the crowds of tourists have disappeared, the street parking is free for 3 hours, and the local shops will warmly welcome you and appreciate your business during this slower time of year.
