Sausalito Film Series at Cavallo

For the past few weeks, it’s been all about the Mill Valley Film Festival which is, undeniably, an amazing, dazzling, remarkable program with fabulous films. Plus, I know the Napa Valley Film Festival is just around the corner. None the less, there is another compelling film you should try to see in between: Just Eat It, which will be screened Sunday evening, October 30th, at Cavallo Point.

Just Eat It is a provocative, award-winning film that addresses the issue of food waste. After realizing that billions of dollars of good food gets tossed out each year (40 percent of all edible food in the U.S. is wasted), filmmakers and food lovers Jenny Rustemeyer and Grant Baldwin pledged to quit grocery shopping and survive only on food that would otherwise be thrown away. Their film, Just Eat It, presents an educational and entertaining chronicle of their experience and insights into both food waste and food recovery – on farms, in supermarkets, at restaurant tables, and in our own refrigerators.

Following the film, Doug McConnell of Bay Area Backroads and OpenRoad on NBC-TV, who is also a longtime Marin environmentalist, will moderate a panel discussion with local leaders including Congressman Jared Huffman. Proceeds from the evening will benefit ExtraFood (ExtraFood.org) a nonprofit dedicated to helping end hunger and food waste in Marin County. Most people don’t realize that huge quantities of healthy, fresh food are wasted in Marin County every day while nearly 50,000 people in the same county do not have a steady supply of food – including as many as 12,000 seniors and more than 12,000 children.

The film event is brought to you by the Sausalito Film Series (sausalitofilmseries.com) which for the past 8 years, has become known for screening riveting documentaries and for supporting the local community and organizations that are making a difference in the world in which we live.

The event starts with a reception at 5 p.m. in the Callippe Theater foyer at Cavallo Point (cavallopoint.com). The film begins at 6 p.m. followed by the panel discussion. Tickets are $25 and include the reception with beer, wine and appetizers. Book tickets now at (sausalitofilmseries.com).
