Sausalito's Super Bowl of Clam Chowder

There is great debate about whether or not Marin County will be the beneficiary of the highly touted 50th Anniversary of the Super Bowl. While the game is being played 60 miles away in Santa Clara, “Super Bowl City” and so much of the Super Bowl activity is centered in San Francisco, right along the Embarcadero, a stone’s throw from the SF ferry landings and the beckoning bay.

Chances are a lot of football game attendees will be staying in the city and will venture at least into Southern Marin, especially Sausalito with its scenic and convenient ferry ride. Sausalito merchants feel there may be some influx of visitors based on the ”Big Game in our Backyard” and are hoping to get some spillover of the million plus visitors who are here for football.

Regardless, the City of Sausalito is hosting a Super Bowl event next week in anticipation of the weekend sporting event. The event may attract more locals than it does visitors, but it should be tasty and savory and a great way to warm up on a chilly afternoon.

Sausalito’s ”Souper Bowl of Clam Chowder” will feature 12 Sausalito restaurants in a chowder cook-off, Thursday February 4th from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. The following restaurants will be vying for the Best Clam Chowder trophy: The Spinnaker, Caffe Tutti, Napa Valley Burger Company, The Barrel House, Scoma’s, The Trident, Sausalito Deli and Café, Venice Gourmet Deli, Copita, The Seafood Peddler, Taste of Rome and Salito’s.

All the restaurants are within walking distance of one another, and all will be offering what they consider “the best” clam chowder. In what may be the most affordable Super Bowl activity available (other than turning the TV on in your own home to watch the game), the price to taste 12 chowders and participate in this “souper bowl” competition is only $10!

Each ticket allows the holder to visit each participating restaurant, sample their clam chowder, and then vote for their favorite. Purchase your tickets soon. For more info, check out the event website.
