The Story of Marin’s Salmon and Steelhead

Did you know that the Lagunitas Creek Watershed is home to the largest-remaining wild run of coho salmon in central California? Efforts to protect and restore these fish have been underway in the Watershed since the 1980s, though in spite of these efforts, the coho are part of the Central California Coast Evolutionarily Significant Unit and are listed as endangered at both the state and federal level. Several groups lead winter tours for the public to learn about and view these spawning salmon, like Marin Parks this weekend, so join Rangers Gabe Ngarangad and Craig Solin on a family friendly hike along Lagunitas Creek in San Geronimo and hopefully you’ll see steelhead and coho salmon returning from the sea! Learn about the fish’s life cycle, the efforts to restore local populations, and some of the interesting local history.
