How to Get Weed in Marin County While Sheltering in Place

How to Get Weed in Marin County While Sheltering in Place

Virtually every industry has now been affected by the global spread of a coronavirus strain that began to dominate headlines in late February. Seemingly overnight, millions of Americans have traded the hustle and bustle of their normal routine for the solitude of their own homes.

While restaurants pivot to take-out or delivery and local entertainment venues sit empty or shutter, many in the cannabis industry are still trying to figure out exactly what role they may have to play in the immediate, yet uncertain, future ahead.

Weed Marin County

As more and more state governors elect to order quarantines of varying levels of severity, the matter of whether facets of the cannabis industry should classify as an “essential business” — and thus one allowed to remain in operation for now — has continuously changed in recent days, though some consistency is finally starting to take hold.

In San Francisco, a “shelter in place” issued by Mayor London Breed on March 16 raised the ire of some after initially failing to include the cannabis industry on the city’s list of essential services. By the following day, the designation had been amended, with San Francisco’s Department of Public Health clarifying that licensed pot shops would be permitted to continue operations in a post on Twitter.

On March 19, Governor Gavin Newsom effectively placed the entirety of California under a “stay at home” order. As of now, dispensaries have been deemed essential at a statewide level and are operating with modified capacities and restrictions. In many cases, that means relegating sales to delivery and curbside pick-up only (the latter thanks to a temporary provision authorized by the California Bureau of Cannabis Control).

Meanwhile, sales have positively spiked as consumers look to stock-up or alleviate boredom and anxiety as a result of being forced to stay home.

In Marin County, where delivery remains the only recreational option available (aside from growing it yourself), San Rafael’s Nice Guys Delivery was receiving up to 60 new orders an hour as of a week ago, according to the Marin Independent Journal. The paper also spoke with Lynette Shaw, operator of the only physical cannabis retail storefront in Marin County.

Sales were reportedly “skyrocketing” for Shaw’s CBC Marin Alliance in Fairfax as well, though the statewide “essential” designation — which does vary in policy on a county by county level — means that those worried their access to legal weed will soon run dry likely have nothing to fear.

For now, Marin County residents can still opt for delivery, while qualified medical marijuana patients continue to have access to CBC Marin Alliance. Those in San Francisco, Alameda, Berkeley, Oakland, and San Jose may also be able to do curbside pick-up transactions while “stay at home” orders remain in effect.
