Breast Cancer Awareness Month
With National Breast Cancer Month upon us, locals are taking big steps to combat the disease. At the University of California, San Francisco, breast cancer surgeon scientist Laura Esserman, M.D., M.B.A. is leading the charge in the development of new studies and treatment options. Dr. Esserman is one of the forces behind BreastCancerTrials.org, which was founded by two of her breast cancer patients. The nonprofit website matches individuals with NCI-approved breast cancer clinical trials. Her latest effort is the Athena Network, a project that enrolls 150,000 California patients, care providers and scientists who will work together as a network to provide new information pertaining to breast cancer risk, prevention and treatment. The goal is to find more effective ways to screen and fight breast cancer, identify who is most at risk for specific types of breast cancer and discover what treatments work best for certain genetic and medical profiles. athenacarenetwork.org

Locals Show at MVFF
This year’s Mill Valley Film Festival, October 7–17, includes shorts, mid-lengths and feature films in a variety of categories. Don’t miss Greenbrae residents Nancy Kelly and Kenji Yamamoto, who screened their first film 25 years ago at the festival and are back with a new full-length documentary, Trust. Kelly wrote, directed and produced the new film; Yamamoto produced and edited it. The documentary is about 18-year-old Marlin, a survivor of rape, who by participating in a neighborhood teen theater company is transformed through the power of art. This year’s film festival also marks the couple’s 25-year wedding anniversary. mvff.com
