This issue we celebrate spring fashion with “The Whites of Spring,” a 10-page spread of photographs by Sasha Gulish shot at the historic ICB Building in Sausalito and featuring the studio and paintings of artist Suzie Buchholz, whose work is featured on this month’s cover. For a behind-the-shoot video, visit our home page.
Spring is also an apt season to talk about greening, and we recognize the Marin community’s commitment to a sustainable philosophy and lifestyle with a story on the growing green practices of local schools (FYI Green), a look at eco-friendly furniture trends (FYI Home Decor) and a spotlight on reusable shopping bags (FYI Shop).
Our travel stories this issue explore both ends of the thermometer. Journey takes us into “Untamed Iceland,” where San Anselmo writer and photographer Dave Bartruff finds that even a midsummer day requires cold-weather gear, and staff writer Mimi Towle in Go urges us to “Jump In” to explore Hawaii’s wet and warm world of water sports.
Here in Marin, Think takes on the topic of the county’s homeless population. Writer Jeff Swenerton reports that the number of people forced onto the streets grew significantly during the recession, straining the resources of the public agencies and private organizations that feed, shelter and attempt to find long-term housing for those without homes. Tim Porter provides the photos.
Also in this issue, Conversation speaks with Nicolette Hahn Niman, author and wife of Bolinas cattle rancher Bill Niman; Marinterview questions San Rafael fashion designer Christopher Collins; Fashion Trends highlights some stellar stackable jewelry choices; and Microclimate visits the Novato neighborhood of Hamilton Field.
As always, our wish is for your good reading. Enjoy Marin Magazine, as we continue to celebrate this extraordinary place!
