Some of the evening’s highlights: the presentation of $5,000 educational scholarships to eight Marin high school students, all of whom have either run the race or  volunteered for it, have completed other community volunteer programs, maintained high GPAs and are planning to attend college.

Norman Pease, who was the oldest runner in the race in 2022 at age 84 and completed a miraculous and consistent string of 40 Dipsea Race runs beginning with his first race in 1983. Pease is also a mountaineer who has  climbed peaks in every state except Alaska.

Dipsea Kidz’s manager and instructor, Ana Levaggi, gave a positive and uplifting description of what she and her staff  teach Marin school kids in 4th through 8th grade: it’s not just about how to run — it’s about building social values and friendships, improving physical fitness and setting goals. Because many of the Dipsea Kidz participants are economically challenged, the Dipsea Race Foundation provides their running shoes, clothes, food and beverages.

Edda Stickle, a co-creator of the Dipsea Kidz program and Dipsea Race Hall of Fame recipient who directed the race for years and recently retired from its board of directors, received a special award and humorous recognition by fellow race board member Dave Albee.

A freelance writer in Marin who writes about family, kids and parenting, Glass is the mother to one son, one dog and a hamster named Miss Geri. When she’s not writing, trekking up steep hills in Marin or driving her kid to sports practice, she and her family spend time in their tiny cabin in Lake Tahoe. She avidly supports the California Academy of Sciences, a world class science museum and research institution, and the Institute on Aging which provides much needed services to Bay Area seniors and disabled adults. Glass is obsessed with baking the perfect loaf of banana bread, something she makes so often she no longer needs to look at a recipe card.
