Reducing our Footprint

Nestled smack in the middle of the Planning, Building & Safety and Environmen- tal Health divisions on the Marin County org chart, the Sustainability Team is literally the heart of the matter. The team is composed of four dedicated staffers who are patiently and effectively trying to reduce our collective ecological footprint. Have a question about green building? Alec Hoffmann is your man. Want to green your business? Dana Armanino is your gal. To ask about solar power or woodstoves, call Omar Pena. And for all of the above and more, Dawn Weisz is the one in charge. The team is working to create a greener future in Marin by disseminating helpful information via its website, marinsustainability.org, making presentations to the public, and developing and updating policies and programs like those in the new Countywide Plan.

For instance, one goal is for the county to become an independent power purchaser, which would enable homes and buildings to run on renewable resources such as solar, wind and geothermal energy. “We are excited about the opportunities to reduce Marin’s consumption of resources and generation of waste,” says Weisz. “Strong community efforts can help Marin serve as a model for other communities.”
