High-tech boats won't be the only thing on display this summer as sailing inspired-exhibits open across the Bay.
California Academy of Sciences: Built for Speed Exhibit (San Francisco)
From speedy ocean animals to the super fast sailboats, Cal Academy is showcasing what it takes to be swift in the sea. Learn about the fascinating adaptations of the ocean’s fastest animals, plus see the AC45 wing-sailed catamaran designed by ORACLE TEAM USA, defender of the 34th America’s Cup, up close and personal. Events, lectures and films also focus on ocean stewardship, and how individuals can be part of the solution by taking steps to reduce plastic waste, unsustainable fishing practices and wastewater pollution.

Legion of Honor: Impressionists Exhibit (San Francisco)
Explore the impact sailing had on the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists through the Legion of Honor’s seafaring-inspired summer exhibit, featuring more than 80 paintings and works on paper by Impressionists such as Claude Monet, Gustave Caillebotte, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro and Post-Impressionists such as Maurice Denis and Paul Signac. Paintings on loan from prestigious international collections, including the Musée d’Orsay, Paris; the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; and private collections joined by works from the Fine Arts Museums’ own holdings.

The Lodge at Cavallo Point: America’s Cup Gilles Martin-Raget Exhibit (Sausalito)
Thirty years of the America’s Cup will be on display at the Lodge at Cavallo Point, captured by the lens of famed yachting photographer Gilles Martin-Raget. The French photographer opens to his vault to reveal his favorite images from eight different Cups across three continents, including the 2013 San Francisco event where he is the official photographer for the America’s Cup. Images will also be available for sale.
Open June 26 through September 1. Opening night cocktail party with Gilles Martin-Raget on June 26 for $75. Exhibit is free to the public.
Spaulding Wooden Boat Center: Image and Reality in Polynesian Voyaging (Sausalito)
Long before there were carbon-fiber catamarans, there were Polynesian canoes, catamaran-style boat that enabled travel between South Africa and South America. The Spaulding Wooden Boat Center is hosting a Polynesian Voyaging event, where you can learn how boat builders and navigators of yesteryear built their canoes from available materials, observe genuine Polynesian canoe designs and construction methods, and learn how to use the wind, seasons, stars and waves to navigate the ocean.
July 11 at 7pm. $10 for the public, $5 for Spaulding members
