Strengthening Your Mind for Joyful Presence
“When you feel bad, let it be your link to others’ suffering. When you feel good, let it be your link with others’ joy.”—Pema Chödrön

So much of our life is spent managing distractions and the demands of a busy life. Then, when we sit for meditation, it is hard to settle our mind and we easily fall into drowsiness. All of us have two natural and essential qualities that we can call upon to help us to live from joyful presence. We have the ability to be present and to know what is happening moment to moment.

Strengthening these essential qualities through practicing shamatha (calm abiding meditation) with our body, our breath and our mind will help us to overcome our challenges and live from joyful presence. In these classes, we will practice the teachings of the nine stages of shamatha. Within our practice of the first four stages, we will cultivate the heartfelt qualities of loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy and equanimity. These additional practices help us to balance our emotions, open our heart and bring us ease and relaxation. In stages five through nine, there will be additional practices to help us enhance our mindfulness and identify and avoid obstacles to our progress.

Through sharing our experience, we not only open to the flow of the ups and downs of our life but we see how this links us to everyone else who is suffering in a similar way. We then naturally discover a deep well of compassion for ourselves and for others. That is awake in the world.

We welcome you to join us.

Awake in the World Series: The Nine Stages of Shamatha is part of our Awake in the World Series. These once-a-month two-hour sessions offer a supportive and kind environment that allows for us to share our successes and opportunities as we work with the process of bringing the dharma into our lives. Seasoned meditators will find these classes deepen their understanding and strengthen commitment to the teachings and practice. New meditators will find these centuries’ old teachings relevant in today’s world in developing contentment and resilience in their lives. Together we will learn from each other and engage as a community toward compassionate action within a divisive world. We welcome and encourage both experienced meditators and new people.

Teacher: Lama Pat first started meditating in 1975. Prior to meeting Lama Palden in 1999, she studied with both western and eastern teachers including several pilgrimages and retreats in India. Under Lama Palden’s tutelage, she completed both the full Shangpa Kagyu practices usually reserved for the traditional hree-year retreat and the four-year teacher training program. In 2017, under the authority of Kalu Rinpoche, both Lama Palden and Lama Drupgyu authorized her as a Lama. With immense gratitude for her teachers and the lineage, Lama Pat is excited to share these teachings with others that supports the natural unfoldment of innate wisdom transforming one’s life. In addition to her dharma studies and teaching, she has been an RN for over 40 years and holds a masters in counseling psychology. She also leads Sukhasiddhi’s Clear Light Institute assisting contemplative approaches to working with illness, death and dying.
