Born in the south of France, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance’s first received academic training in sculpture and followed it with a degree in furniture design from Les Arts Décoratifs. He has designed for companies such as Saint Louis, Hermès and Ligne Roset. His designs are a unique combination of heritage, industrial design and fine craftsmanship. Caractère, an understated dark-edged tableware collection for the French purveyor Revol, was created to mark its 250th anniversary in 2018. The designer says the collection’s concept began as a charcoal line moving freely on paper — the movements of a hand gesture, both disobedient and imperfect. These sketches turned into beautiful three-dimensional objects, while preserving the irregular contours of the original drawings.
The collection is made of black porcelain and also available in white. Most shapes are also available in shades named after spices — mint, tonka, nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric and cardamom. These pieces can be mixed and matched and are suitable for every-day use. The enamel-free rim is resistant to chipping and brings additional style to this unique collection. Plates can be stacked on their straight edges. With this collection, balance and rhythm is created on the table as the perfect outer-rim rests in contrast with the irregularities on the inner rim.
