Thursday Lunch – The Counter

It’s Thursday again, which means it’s our weekly Thursday Lunch! If you haven’t heard about it, here’s the scoop: we here at Marin Magazine are committed to picking a place in Marin, ordering food, eating it and blogging about the things we like (it's a Pollyanna version of Julie Powell in Julie & Julia).

This week we chose The Counter, a burger joint with locations all over California and a few others around the country. Our Marin restaurant is located in Corte Madera’s Town Center. It offers starters, sandwiches, a kids menu, signature burgers, signature burgers in a bowl and (drum roll please) a build your own burger option. (And yes, they have fries. Check out how much I love fries here).

The good news: we all enjoyed our meals. The bad news: Thursday lunch is over (well, for this week at least). Check out what we had to say:

Build Your Own Burger: 1/3 lb. beef, jalapeno jack cheese, bun, $8.95

French fries (regular order), $3.75

Luncher: Maeve

Thoughts: Maeve thought the burger automatically came with lettuce and tomato, so she just ordered jalapeno jack cheese. She thought the burger was tasty, but wished she'd ordered more toppings. The bun was sturdy and delicious, which she believes can make or break a burger. The fries were good, too.

Unique Veggie Burger: 1/3 lb. housemade veggie patty, red onion, organic mixed greens, roasted red peppers, sprouts and Dijon balsamic, $8.95

Lunchers: Michele/Leah

Thoughts: Michele and Leah split the veggie burger and both say it was plenty. Michele says it was very flavorful and had a delicious dipping sauce. She thinks her meat-loving husband would even enjoy it. The best part was that it filled her up without the gross satiation that can accompany a “traditional” burger meal. Final thoughts: “I’m going back!” Leah seconds that.

Build Your Own Burger: 1/3 lb. turkey, avocado, feta cheese, gluten-free bun, $9.95

Sweet potato fries (regular order), $4.95

Luncher: Sophie

Thoughts: I’ll put avocado and feta cheese on almost anything (okay, not oatmeal or ice cream – I said almost anything). Added to a turkey burger (which, by the way, was gluten-free), they are pure bliss. I also had a gluten-free bun, which was fluffy and hearty. The sweet potato fries were great too, though a little cold – they are much better when not stuffed in a box for 15 minutes. I gave a quarter of my burger to Mimi, but now I’m kind of regretting it – I want more!

Turkey Chilli with cranberries and scallions, $5.95

Luncher: Mimi

Thoughts: Mimi ordered the Turkey Chilli because the price was right. But after half of my burger (she couldn’t tell that the bun was gluten-free!) and a plate of sweet potato fries, she barely had enough room for more than a couple bites. It now sits in the fridge and she plans to eat it with rice tomorrow.

Mini Burgers (kids menu): plate of two with American cheese, pickles and fries, $5.95

Luncher: Dana

Thoughts: Who doesn’t like feeling like a kid again? Dana ordered an item off the kids menu. “The buns are the bomb!” said Dana. It was a “nice little meal” with pickles that tasted tangy and homemade. The meat was tasty – not overdone, just the way she likes it.

We also loved the takeout boxes!

Until next Thursday!
