San Francisco High School’s Location Provides Unique Educational Opportunities

August is the time of year when parents begin the process of evaluating which high school is best for their children for the 2025-26 school year. There are many choices out there, and just as many reasons why families decide to apply to a particular school.

Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory’s unique location in the heart of San Francisco is why many Bay Area families apply there. The campus, mere blocks away from the hub of politics and the arts, allows SHC to provide an educational experience unlike any other. For students interested in civics, field trips to San Francisco City Hall or class visits by community leaders aid in their understanding of their courses while developing their own political and social viewpoints. The San Francisco Ballet, San Francisco Symphony and the Asian Art Museum are just a few destinations that spark creativity in students interested in the visual and performing arts. For those who have an interest in doing service, Sacred Heart Cathedral provides service-oriented opportunities for students at local nonprofits, which educates them on the needs of the surrounding community and how they can serve them today and in the future.

The City is a part of the classroom at SHC. “We’re able to really connect our students to experiences in the community and around them,” Principal Gary Cannon said.

The location of the campus has another perk—transportation access. From public transit and biking to driving and walking, Sacred Heart Cathedral is easily accessible to students, especially those who live outside San Francisco. The SHC Transportation Program, established over 10 years ago, will now provide round-trip, van shuttle transportation service to families in the North Bay starting this 2024-2025 school year. “For us parents, it makes scheduling very easy,” said an SHC parent. “The elimination of this additional daily time commitment on our part has been a blessing, needless to say, in addition to the elimination of the wear and tear on our vehicles making the drive every day.”

Eighth-grade students can experience the benefits of the location of SHC firsthand through Irish for a Day, which is a chance for an 8th grader to experience a day in the life of an SHC student and provides opportunities to meet with passionate and experienced teachers, tour the campus and connect with student ambassadors. Families can also attend SHC Open House on Saturday, October 26 to tour the state-of-the-art facilities, speak with faculty and hear directly from the school president and principal about the school’s innovative curriculum.
