This issue Marin Magazine marks its first green anniversary. For a year now we’ve printed the magazine on 30 percent post-consumer waste paper—saving 120,000 gallons of water, 543 tons of greenhouse gas emissions and approximately 2,200 trees so far.
We’re acknowledging that milestone with several articles about the environment and other green issues. First, we venture out to the Farallon Islands, where we see how the efforts of several Marin residents are helping protect the 250,000 birds that inhabit this rocky marine sanctuary. Then, P. J. Bremier takes us inside the Mill Valley home of Ariel and Peter Englander, where forest-friendly materials, energy-stingy appliances and an eco-friendly garden give the house a small but still stylish environmental footprint. In Go, Mimi Towle poses the question: what is ecotourism? Finally, our FYI departments show how to make everyday life a bit greener: Business reports on the efforts of local activist Lisa Max and Go Solar Marin; Home Decor explores a green Mill Valley kitchen; and Travel locates sustainable local hotels.
March is also our spring fashion issue and we have a special contribution from acclaimed fashion illustrator and design school director Gladys Perint Palmer, whose whimsical work appears on our cover. Mandy Behbehani profiles the San Rafael resident in Life. Our Fashion feature, focusing on the season’s bright colors, is photographed by Sasha Gulish and begins with another Palmer illustration.
Also in the issue, Journey follows writer Sara Godwin as she safaris in Kenya, mixing a photographic hunt in the wild with a retreat to luxurious seaside spas; Play tags along as horses and hounds go on the hunt in Nicasio; Microclimate navigates the canals of Bel Marin Keys; Dialogue engages Men Are From Mars writer John Gray; and Flavor searches for the all-American hamburger.
