View from Mt. Tam

After one of the wettest rainy seasons in decades, you might think now is not the time to worry about Marin’s water supply, but as Somer Flaherty reports in Think, there’s no guarantee that today’s full reservoirs can quench tomorrow’s thirst. Conservation is on the rise for now, but Marin water officials still have backup plans for erecting a costly—and controversial—desalination plant in San Rafael. Whether that plant ever gets built is up to you—and Mother Nature.

One way to save water in Marin is by getting out of town. Fly over to Italy, for example, where writer and photographer Karyn Millet tells us in Journey that the best refresher after a warm day of art and history under the Tuscan sun is still a cool, creamy cup of gelato. Or drive down the coast to Big Sur, as Mimi Towle does in Go, for a dose of vitamin V at the newly renovated Ventana Inn. Then there’s Art Spander’s advice in Life—pack your clubs and indulge in a duffer’s delight by playing all of your favorite golf holes, wherever they may be.

Also in this issue, Conversation discusses the changes in Marin’s health care landscape with Dr. Martin Brotman, president of Sutter Health’s West Bay Region; Marinterview puts the questions to Dr. Curtis Robinson of Mill Valley, president of the Marin County School Board; the worm man of Alcatraz tells us in FYI Gardens how he makes the Rock bloom; Microclimate steps offshore (just a bit) to explore the floating-home communities of Sausalito; and just in time for Father’s Day, Fashion Trends—with the help of Wayne Kaleck of Sausalito’s Gene Hiller—show us the eight steps to tie-tying success.

As always, our wish is for your good reading. Enjoy Marin Magazine, as we continue to celebrate this extraordinary place!
