The perfect healthy fall recipe to try 🥬 Delic The perfect healthy fall recipe to try 🥬

Delicata, Radicchio and Black Rice Salad

Ingredients
Serves 4
Active Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes, plus rice cooking and cooling time

Dressing
1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1 small garlic clove, minced
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Salad
1 cup black rice
Kosher salt
1 large or 2 small delicata squash
1 to 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 large head radicchio, cored, leaves torn
2 to 3 scallions, thinly sliced
1/4 cup chopped Italian parsley
Pepitas and/or dried cranberries, for garnish

Directions
Whisk the dressing ingredients in a small bowl. Set aside.

Cook the rice, according to package instructions. Season to taste with salt and set aside to cool.

Heat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment.

Cut the squash crosswise in 1/3-inch-thick slices; scoop out the seeds. Place the rings in a large bowl.

Add the oil, 1 teaspoon salt, cumin and black pepper and toss to coat.

Arrange the squash rings in one layer on the baking sheet. Transfer to the oven and roast until tender and golden brown in spots, about 25 minutes, flipping once.

Remove from the oven and lightly brush with the dressing. Cool to lukewarm or room temperature.

Spread the radicchio in a serving bowl. Stir the scallions into the rice and then spoon the rice over and around the radicchio.

Arrange the delicata rings over the salad, tucking some of the rings under the radicchio leaves.

Garnish with parsley and the pepitas/dried cranberries, if using. Drizzle with the remaining dressing to your taste.

This picture, taken in the 1930s, shows one of two This picture, taken in the 1930s, shows one of two, still operating Marin railroad tunnels that were built nearly 150-years ago. That’s an electric-powered interurban railcar entering the 1,200-foot Cal Park Tunnel, which was constructed in 1884. It was rebuilt in 2010 and is now being used by SMART (Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit) running between Larkspur and numerous northern destinations — the billboard advertising paint is on today’s Highway 101. The other tunnel that is still operational was also rebuilt by SMART, and burrowed into the hill between downtown San Rafael and the Marin County Civic Center. When driving Highway 101 and nearing North San Pedro Road, you’re near this tunnel, the Porto Suello Tunnel. 

According to historian Richard Torney, though Marin is one of the smallest counties in California (per area), it once had an astounding 10 railroad tunnels open and operating. Other tunnels include two created in 1884 for the Northwestern Pacific Railroad line that connected Tiburon and San Rafael, the Reed Tunnel near Tiburon’s Blackie’s Pasture where trestle timbers are still standing, and the Meadowsweet Tunnel in Corte Madera where no remnants are visible today. Finally, there’s the much-discussed Alto Tunnel on the Mill Valley – Corte Madera border. Its 2,200-feet length was bored (a process of building a tunnel, using a Tunnel Boring Machine, or TBM) in 1884, and was operational until 1971. It was then sealed shut with pea gravel and concrete. 

A group called Friends of Alto Tunnel would now like to reopen it, and create a greenway path for bikes and hikes that would connect southern and northern Marin — its estimated cost is somewhere north of $50 million.

A new wave of California farmers and food leaders A new wave of California farmers and food leaders are reviving ancient practices to heal the soil, nourish communities and reshape agriculture.

In a spot between Monterey and Salinas — an area affectionately known as the “Salad Bowl of the World” — the regenerative organic farming initiative, Regenerative California (RC), is driving a shift in industry practices. 

This nonprofit initiative, co-founded by former longtime Marin resident Kristin Coates, launched in 2023. It is designed to create the first regenerative economy in the US, and focuses on agriculture, marine resources and healthy affordable housing, while moving away from extractive practices. 

Last spring, Regenerative California launched its agricultural initiative with its first regenerative farm known as Regenerate 68 Farm. The 68 acre farm, located just off of Highway 68 in Monterey County, is located on the Ferini Ranch.

What’s Old is New Again 

According to the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), California is the largest agricultural exporting state in the country to date: it supplies over a third of the nation’s vegetables and three-quarters of its fruits and nuts. To keep up with the growing demands of food production over the last hundred years, farmers moved away from indigenous agricultural practices — known today as “regenerative farming” — and relied more on modern farming techniques to yield larger crops of single items. This has resulted in more food, but it also had serious drawbacks to the health of the soil, the nutritional value of the food and quality of life for the farmers.

"Seizing the attention of voters requires meeting "Seizing the attention of voters requires meeting them where they already are.

Ambitious political leaders are saying farewell to the old modes of communication. Gone are the days when a town hall or press release could reliably shape public opinion. Political relevance today requires meeting voters where they already are.

That place is the digital feed. According to the Pew Research Center, 53% of US adults now get their news from social media at least occasionally. Among adults under 30, the number rises to 76%.

In this fast-paced environment, a politician must know how to stop a scrolling thumb. The medium is the short video, the headline with a hook or the post that lands even with the sound off. Content must be packaged for velocity and reach or it will fail.

To observe this trend is not to celebrate it uncritically. The business of governing still depends on smart policymaking, people skills, and a grasp of complexity. But those virtues matter little if no one is watching. Without attention, there is no persuasion. Without persuasion, there is no power.

The digital feed is no longer a sideshow to politics. It is the main stage. Leaders who understand this are far more likely to shape not just conversations but outcomes."
