For years hot yoga and saunas were considered a li For years hot yoga and saunas were considered a little fringe, if not outright kooky. But new research is heating things up. A recent Harvard Medical School study found that doing hot yoga just once a week significantly reduced symptoms of depression. And now Bill Gifford, the best-selling author of anti-aging books "Spring Chicken", and "Outlive" (written with Peter Attia), is focusing more attention on the benefits of heat in his just-released book Hotwired.

Here are some of Gifford’s top findings ⬇️

1️⃣ Heat may be a better antidepressant than … antidepressants

Growing research shows that heat exposure can trigger the release of feel-good neurochemicals that improve mood and reduce stress. Some studies have even examined sauna therapy as a possible treatment for depression. Which may explain why people emerge looking simultaneously exhausted and weirdly optimistic.

2️⃣ Saunas can function like a workout

Intense heat exposure can mimic the effects of moderate exercise. Major Finnish studies link frequent sauna use with lower rates of heart disease, stroke and overall mortality. In Finland, sweating profusely in a wooden box is a national pastime.

3️⃣ Training in heat may improve athletic performance

Heat acclimation helps the body become more efficient at cooling itself, expanding plasma volume and lowering strain during exercise. Elite athletes increasingly use heat training to improve endurance, because once your body adapts to exercising in 100-degree heat, ordinary workouts feel a lot less dramatic.

4️⃣ Humans may be uniquely built to handle heat

One of Gifford’s central arguments is that we humans evolved to endure heat remarkably well. Our ability to sweat efficiently helped early humans travel and hunt in punishing climates. Repeated heat exposure also activates heat shock proteins, which researchers believe may help with cellular repair and recovery. In other words, the body doesn’t just survive heat — it needs it.
