What's it like to turn 90? "Getting old ain't fun, What's it like to turn 90? "Getting old ain't fun," says Marin Magazine's co-founder Jim Wood — but his story might just change your mind.

As Americans live longer and families navigate ris As Americans live longer and families navigate rising healthcare and housing costs, the question of where to grow old has become not just a personal choice, but a defining issue for an aging society.

Marin County, where more than 22% of the population is over 65, is one of the oldest suburban areas in the state. This means many Marin citizens are now facing a decision: Will they stay in their homes — often homes they bought decades ago — or move into a retirement community?

The decision about whether or not to “age at home” depends on financial and health circumstances, as well as family (or other support) proximity and availability. There is no rule book or template for elderly people and their families as they face this decision.

In this month's issue, we profile three Marinites, ages 93, 98 and 100, who have decided to age in their homes.

In case you missed it... summer kicked off in styl In case you missed it... summer kicked off in style at Cavallo Point ☀️

We first joined forces with Cavallo Point 20 years ago, and this Summer Kick Off Party marked another chapter in our amazing partnership. Over 400 guests from all over the Bay Area gathered at the historic Fort Baker grounds to celebrate and socialize, dancing the afternoon away to live music from San Francisco favorite David Martin’s House Party, all against a backdrop of stunning Bay views.

Here’s to another 20+ years of celebrating Marin together 🥂

🌊 Did you know there's a rainforest in our backyar 🌊 Did you know there's a rainforest in our backyard — and you don't have to leave the Bay Area to see it?

Just offshore, frigid upwelling water fuels a kelp forest ecosystem so dense and alive it rivals the Amazon. Giant kelp can grow up to two feet a day, building underwater "skylines" up to 100 feet tall — nurseries, highways and high-rises for everything from rockfish to giant Pacific octopus.

And here's the part that might surprise you: after years of decline, things are turning around. Bluefin tuna are feeding right outside the Golden Gate. Harbor porpoises are back in the Bay after a 60-year absence. Rockfish are rebounding. Salmon counts are finally climbing again.

The Pacific isn't collapsing — it's recalibrating 🐙🐠
