At Hayes Valley Medical Esthetics (HVME), the guiding philosophy is understated refinement: the best aesthetic work should never look obvious. HVME has earned a devoted following across San Francisco and Marin through its thoughtful approach to regenerative aesthetics, skin longevity, and natural-looking rejuvenation.
Led by founder and clinical director Linda Behla, RN, the practice is known for introducing advanced technologies and innovative treatments that are carefully tested, vetted, and refined before ever reaching the treatment room.
How would you describe your philosophy on aesthetics and aging?
My philosophy has always centered on enhancement rather than transformation. The goal is not to change how someone looks, but to support the natural evolution of the face over time.
The most beautiful results are often the ones no one can quite identify. Thoughtful treatments should preserve what makes each person unique while helping them age with confidence and authenticity.
How has the industry evolved over your career?
Years ago, aesthetics was much more focused on isolated correction and volume replacement. Today, there is a deeper understanding of prevention, collagen stimulation, regenerative medicine, and skin longevity. Patients are more educated and increasingly interested in maintaining healthy, natural-looking results over time rather than pursuing dramatic change.
One of the most exciting shifts has been the emergence of biologics and regenerative therapies. Treatments incorporating growth factors, exosomes, PDGF, PDRN, and PRF are shifting the focus from correcting signs of aging to supporting the body’s regenerative processes.

How do you evaluate and select new technologies for your practice?
One thing that differentiates our practice is that we don’t adopt technology simply because it’s new—we adopt it because it delivers measurable value for our patients. Every device is personally evaluated for outcomes, patient experience, and long-term value before it is incorporated into clinical practice. Innovation is important, but only if it meaningfully improves the patient experience and delivers consistent results.
Today, we offer advanced technologies including Scarlet Pro™, our next-generation radiofrequency microneedling platform, along with PLADUOpro™ plasma technology and I-LASER 1940nm to support skin tightening, texture refinement, and facial and body rejuvenation with minimal downtime.
How does advanced training contribute to both patient safety and natural-looking results?
Successful outcomes require a combination of anatomical knowledge, clinical judgment, technical expertise, and artistry. Advanced training allows providers to approach each patient thoughtfully and conservatively rather than simply following trends or overcorrecting. It also helps them recognize when less treatment—or no treatment—is the right recommendation.
Our providers continually refine their techniques and stay current with the latest advancements. Ultimately, experience and judgment are just as important as technical skill when it comes to delivering safe, beautiful results.
What are the most common misconceptions about aesthetic medicine, and how do you address concerns about looking overdone?
Many people still associate aesthetic medicine with dramatic transformation, when the best results are often the least obvious.
Concerns about looking “frozen” or “overdone” are common, which is why the consultation process is so important. We spend time understanding each patient’s goals, evaluating their anatomy and skin health, and creating realistic expectations together.
Often, the most satisfying outcomes come from addressing underlying concerns such as inflammation, rosacea, acne, and sun damage rather than focusing solely on volume correction. A gradual, layered approach often creates the most balanced and enduring results.
Ultimately, our goal is to help patients look rested, refreshed, and confident—never frozen, overfilled, or overdone.
What impact are GLP-1 medications having on facial aging and skin quality?
One of the biggest emerging trends in aesthetics is the growing number of patients experiencing facial and body changes associated with rapid weight loss. As volume decreases—particularly in the face — we often see hollowing, increased skin laxity, and changes in facial balance. Similar changes can occur throughout the body as volume and elasticity decline.
The approach has evolved far beyond simply “filling” the face after weight loss. Today, we take a more proactive approach, supporting skin quality and structural support throughout the weight-loss journey rather than waiting until changes become more advanced. In many cases, supporting the skin during active weight loss can lead to better long-term outcomes.
RF microneedling can support skin tightening, while biostimulatory injectables such as Sculptra® and hyperdilute Radiesse® help stimulate collagen renewal and gradual volume restoration. Depending on the patient, we may also incorporate hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Restylane® or Juvéderm®, to subtly restore volume while preserving facial harmony.
The best results often come from combining biostimulators, energy-based technologies, skincare, and strategic volume restoration. Patients today want natural-looking results—not an overfilled appearance.
How important are clinical facials and medical-grade skincare to long-term skin health?
They play an essential role and are often one of the most overlooked aspects of healthy aging. One of the biggest misconceptions in aesthetics is that a single procedure, laser, or surgery can permanently “fix” aging. Beautiful skin is built over time through consistency, prevention, and daily maintenance.
Clinical facials play an important role by preparing the skin for treatment, improving hydration, supporting recovery, and helping maintain results between visits.
Equally important is a personalized medical-grade skincare regimen. Medical-grade skincare supports skin renewal, addresses common concerns, and enhances the longevity of in-office treatments.
As I’ve entered my 60s, I can honestly say that consistent skincare has been one of the most valuable investments I’ve made in my skin. Genetics and procedures matter, but daily maintenance is essential.
The patients who age most beautifully are those who consistently invest in their skin through professional treatments, customized skincare, and healthy habits. Procedures can enhance and accelerate results, but healthy skin truly begins at home.

What still inspires you most after all these years?
What continues to inspire me is the trust our patients place in us. It’s incredibly rewarding to help someone feel more confident and comfortable in their own skin. Aesthetic medicine continues to evolve, but the relationships we build and the impact we can have on people’s lives remain the most meaningful part of the work.
