Did the Photographer Shoot North or South? If your Did the Photographer Shoot North or South? If your answer was south, you’re wrong.

At first glance at the above photo, locals will think they’re looking south toward San Francisco. Not so. In 1925, this photographer was pointing their camera north toward Marin’s vast and empty hinterlands. At the time, the county’s population was roughly 34,500 folks; today it’s around 254,500.

There also wasn’t a Golden Gate Bridge. Its construction wouldn’t be started for another eight years in 1933 and wouldn’t be completed until 1937. Furthermore, Sausalito’s main street wasn’t called Bridgeway; back then, the main drag was named Water Street.

On the far right, the Princess Theater was just beginning to show “talkies.” And beyond the Princess Theater, where the building sign says Hotel Restaurant, is where @cultivar_sausalito (a sister site to the Marina’s famed restaurant Cultivar San Francisco) recently opened. Heading north, at lower left in the photo, was (and still is) Princess Street. Why so many Princesses? According to the Sausalito Historical Society, it’s because in 1868 the first ferry ferryboat that brought San Franciscans to Sausalito was named Princess. So the road to the ferry terminal became, and still is, Princess Street.

Then in 1875, the Northwestern Pacific Railroad brought trains to Sausalito and the ferry terminal was moved to its present location at the foot of El Portal. However, according to Marin: A History by Barry Spitz, ferry service was somewhat inadequate. “By the late 1920s,” Spitz writes, “Motorists waiting for a return ferry to San Francisco on summer Sundays had to endure extremely long lines. At least once they went clear back to Corte Madera.”

Moral of the story: Some things never change.
