Poggio Trattoria, Best Al Fresco Dining Marin

Vitello sliced excruciatingly thin and topped with lemon and tonnato sauce is a singular dish in the hands of executive chef Benjamin Balesteri who creates Northern Italian fare using local and Italian ingredients. The bar may be the most hopping in town and is recognized for its killer Negroni. Private dining rooms above the restaurant can accommodate larger parties (10 to 150 guests).

Multiple generations of the Ancona family create an authentic Italian eatery featuring dishes like arrosticini which is a find outside of Abruzzo, handmade pastas, and seasonal antipasti that has showcased the cuisine of the Campania region for more than 20 years. Tiburon

Petite Left Bank

Petite Left Bank, Roland Passot

Chef Roland Passot is at it again, opening his latest French café and bistro in downtown Tiburon in mid-September. The day-to-day operations are under the watchful eye of executive chef Justin Minnich who will bring to life classics like escargot en croute, salade Niçoise, moules frites, and beef bourguignon. For now, it is dinner only but a morning menu of composed plates and pastries is in the works and lunch and brunch is expected soon after.

The Caprice

The Caprice

Enhanced bay views from every seat are just one of many charms after an extensive remodel reworked the entire space. The revamped menu of well-crafted comfort food from land (bone-in filet mignon, French onion omelet) and sea (gnocchi with crab, abalone dore) options features classic cocktails and a wine list that leans towards American, Italian and French bottlings.

In addition to Prime Rib Sundays, Tamale Tuesdays, and “Last Thursdays” (a multi-course paired dinnerwith a local winery), Gravity offers brunch, lunch, happy hour, and dinner experiences that are luxurious yet approachable.

Les Marais

Le Marais

A Parisian style French bakery with three San Francisco locations now calls Marin home. An assortment of take-and-bake favorites like cinnamon buns, butter croissants, and kouign amann, freshly baked items and a “breakfast all day” menu are popular. There is quiche and salad at lunch but those in the know opt for avocado croissant toast, chicken paillarde with fresh herbs, and the Chartreuse cappuccino.

Also check out Buvette du Marais, a new opening in Larkspur at the Marin Country Mart. Don’t miss their freshly baked breads.

Gravity Tavern 

With ingredients suited to reflect modern tastes, American classics like grilled chicken Waldorf salad with pickled grapes, lobster roll with toasted challah and veggie slaw, and a land and sea pasta with house-made egg pasta, pork belly and crab, may have also been familiar fare for passengers of the Mt. Tam gravity car for which this saloon was named. Enjoy them on the popular patio.

Floodwater 

Sip a “Gold Rush” (Old Forester bourbon, local honey, lemon) at the room-length bar while noshing on pork belly steamed buns or dive into Shorty’s Tall Reuben in the TV-free front room. Up the coziness factor in the back room as you tuck into a margherita pizza cooked in the wood-fired oven at this spacious Tam Valley/Manzanita tavern. The patio features multiple fire pits.

Bungalow 44

The normally bustling bar is one of Mill Valley’s hot spots, ideal for savoring a seasonal cocktail or an order for their famous kickin’ fried chicken. The  one-dollar happy hour oyster program still operates from 5–6 p.m., Monday–Thursday and the heated outdoor patio is a new hot spot in town.

Playa

Playa Mill Valley dishes

With a chef from Mexico City, Playa’s food offers traditional dishes with modern flavors and presentations. A Little Gem salad sparkles with tomatillo dressing and enchiladas shine from a glossy coating of house made black mole and micro greens. The bar highlights exceptional tequilas and mezcals but the el Slushie and house margarita have legions of fans and are perfect for sipping on the large, heated back patio. Oysters Bingo, baby back ribs, and chili-lime “brick” chicken are a few of the satisfying comfort-food menu items that have made this classic roadhouse a favorite since the ’30s. The warm dark-wood bar with red leather booths is a popular spot for cocktails, conversations or a light meal. Food at Comforts, San Anselmo

Established in 1986, Comforts has a cozy sit-down cafe, serving breakfast, lunch and weekend brunch. Their large takeout section offers a wide selection of house-made bakery items, seasonal salads, soups, sandwiches and family meals for dinner at home. Besides the famous Chinese chicken salad, other winners are the stuffed pecan-crusted French toast, chicken Okasan (nicknamed “Crack Chicken” by fans), Korean BBQ flank steak and Wor Won Ton soup. Catering services are also available.

Once you stop in for the deliciously fresh quinoa wrap, you’ll want to return to try the chipotle rice bowl. Family owned and operated since 1985, La Toscana completed an extensive interior and exterior renovation, transforming an already popular San Rafael gathering spot into a place for any occasion.
