A decade ago, MVFF launched its Mind the Gap initi A decade ago, MVFF launched its Mind the Gap initiative. The aim was to achieve gender equity across all sectors of the film industry by breaking boundaries and challenging social norms through representation and insightful discussion rooted in the art and craft of filmmaking.

MVFF and Mind the Gap committed to having 50 percent of the festival’s films directed by women by 2020, and they exceeded that goal, with 57 percent of the festival’s features helmed by women that year. In the subsequent years, the initiative continued to reach, or nearly reach, that 50 percent goal.

This year, the festival is honoring two surging talents: Eva Victor, star, writer and director of A24 film Sorry, Baby, and actor Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You). Both will be presented with the Mind the Gap Award for their artistry and impact on the industry.

Mind the Gap has become a cornerstone of MVFF, and the films and filmmakers it champions continue to pave the way for and empower the next generation of women in film.

Celebrated restaurateur Larry Mindel helped transf Celebrated restaurateur Larry Mindel helped transform the Bay Area’s culinary landscape by bringing authentic Italian cuisine to the forefront. As the founder of legendary restaurants like Ciao!, Prego, Poggio and the driving force behind Il Fornaio’s nationwide success, Mindel’s story is equal parts passion, creativity and bold business instinct.

Q: Did you really start your first company at 26 with just $36 in the bank?

A: Yes, it’s true. I bought Caswell Coffee, a San Francisco institution.

Q: You are credited with helping bring authentic Italian cuisine to California, if not the U.S. What inspired your deep connection to Italy?

A: I first visited Italy after college and fell in love with the people and culture. For our restaurants, I hired native Italians and took our managers on annual trips to Italy. We studied the food and service, comparing true Italian to the Americanized version. And they got it. They understood the value of authenticity — of having chefs who cooked real Italian food. Not because they read about it in a book, but because they had it in their hearts.
