On April 26, Marin Civic Center Lagoon Park was buzzing with excitement as 250 runners, walkers and families of all abilities prepared to race. This day marked The Helix School’s inaugural Paths to Possibilities 5K, which raised funds in support of the organization’s mission as a non-public school creating a welcoming and enriching educational setting for students with autism spectrum disorder. Craig Schmidt of Inside Trail Racing helped manage the race.
Attendees also had the opportunity to peruse the various booths manned by additional local organizations, such as The Helix Adult Academy, The Arc, Balance Ability Wellness and Built Curious Workshops.
Post-race fuel was provided by A Fork Full of Earth Organic Catering and vendors including Red Whale Coffee, Early Bird Tacos, SRSLY GOOD Foods and Pibil Marin.
There were a few notable guests in attendance — U.S. Congressman Jared Huffman (CA District 2) and Golden State Warriors announcer Tim Roye spoke about the importance of supporting neurodiverse education. Emcee Ricky Del Rosario helped facilitate the flow.
The Helix School founder Marjorie McMorris presented Congressman Huffman with The Helix School Founder’s Award, in recognition of his work on behalf of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and continued support for students with disabilities.
In addition to the race and speeches, there was also Ra raffle with eight prizes, such as a signed Steph Curry jersey. The fundraising efforts ultimately raised a total of $56,000.
The Helix School thanks its sponsors who helped bring the event together: Champion Sponsor Marin Community Foundation and Supporter Sponsors including The Helix Adult Academy, The Arc California, Marin Magazine, The Arc US, Ability Central, Ahmed’s Moving Express, Sports Basement and Golden State Warriors.
