Behind the Scenes: Fall 2015 Fashion Shoot

Go ahead and pull those bell-bottoms and platform shoes out of storage, because the 70’s are back! It’s a little more subtle and a little more sophisticated, but high waists and flared legs ruled the Fall 2015 runways.

Our take on the close-up image of Kate Hudson for the movie poster.

I immediately thought of the movie Almost Famous starring Kate Hudson and took inspiration from her character Penny Lane’s eclectic 70’s style – though instead of being the “groupie,” our girl would be the star. Our model Lolly Howie from Look Model Agency is a dead ringer for Kate Hudson and played the role perfectly. She joked that she had always wanted to be a rock star, and got to fulfill that fantasy during the shoot.

What better setting for a rock-and-roll themed shoot than the local favorite, Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley. Marin is known for it’s amazing music scene, and this shoot gave us the opportunity to bring attention to that aspect of the area.

Of course no shoot could ever be complete (or even happen in the first place) without the photography! We once again collaborated with photographer Claudia Goetzelmann on this project, who has shot the past several fashion features for us. She worked with strong flash lighting and the existing colored stage lighting to create beautiful images with a trippy psychedelic blur effect.

We know that the 70’s were all about the hair, so hair and makeup artist Elizabeth Chang created big hair and loose waves to pay homage to that free-spirited vibe. She came armed with a small leaf blower – the secret to perfect wind-blown hair in pictures. While shooting, there was always a constant whoosh whoosh from the leaf blower accompanying the classic rock playing over the speakers to set the mood, definitely not a quiet set!

As far as makeup, I was very inspired by the Anna Sui Fall 2015 runway show, and Elizabeth created her own interpretation of the fresh-faced look (we’ll have a whole blog for you later on how to achieve the cover look and what products she used).

This was such a fun shoot and so different from anything we’ve done before, I hope you like it!
