With summer heat waves rolling across the country, everyone is looking for a “chill” escape. It doesn’t get any cooler than Berkeley. Set on the sparkling San Francisco Bay, Berkeley offers a prevailing Pacific breeze, fun, off-beat college town vibe, local libations to keep everyone “hydrated,” iconic dining and awe-inspiring arts.

Summer of Soccer

For fans of fútbol, Berkeley will be bringing the pitch to you in the form of watch parties across the city as the sport’s biggest names descend on North America with their sights set on glory. You can catch all the action set to take place at Santa Clara’s Levi Stadium — and throughout the continent — at participating locations like Cali’s Sports Bar & Kitchen.

Additionally, if you’d prefer to condense your summer of soccer into a few marathon days, there are several unique watch parties happening in Berkeley this month built around the big soccer action to come.

You can’t tell the story of Berkeley without touching on its legendary roots as a bastion for music in its infinite forms.

From Green Day’s initial rise at DIY punk venue 924 Gilman to memories of the Grateful Dead jamming at the Greek Theatre, Berkeley’s music scene has long catered to many ears and made stars of numerous unlikely heroes. This summer, you can experience the good vibes for yourself as the city welcomes a veritable gold rush of talent to play at venues small and large alike.

The UC Theatre has come to occupy a special spot on University Ave. Currently celebrating its 10th anniversary as an independent music venue, it has a delightfully eclectic schedule in store for the summer that includes dates with rock/ska/reggae veterans Rx Bandits (June 25) and singer-songwriter Bill Callahan (Aug. 28).

Cornerstone

Combining craft beer and a menu of delicious comfort food with a regular calendar of live entertainment, Cornerstone on Shattuck Ave. in downtown Berkeley is the perfect place to catch rising talent and local favorites. This summer, the venue’s bookings include chances to see Phish cover band Chum (June 20), veteran EDM artist RJD2 (July 17), and rising Seattle rock band La Luz (Aug. 7).

The Freight

Founded in 1968, The Freight on Addison St. is the place to go to see folk legends, jazz greats, and more in an intimate, acoustically ideal setting. Proving their prowess for booking the unexpected but incredible, the Freight’s calendar this summer includes a date with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir (June 12), a storytelling evening with ‘The Moth’ (July 1), and a pairing of roots icons Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore (July 18).

924 Gilman

It’s always standing room only at 924 Gilman, where you can still spot a graffiti tag for Sweet Children — Green Day’s initial group — on the ceiling. This tiny volunteer-run co-op is a great place to see local punk acts, offering up to 20 low-cost shows a month to ensure there’s always a place to start a mosh pit. The venue’s upcoming bookings include Summer Fest, which features 11 bands over the course of two days (June 12–13) and the return of Jejune (July 26) for their first shows in the US in 25 years.

For the biggest names and a breathtakingly beautiful atmosphere, make sure you secure tickets to see a show at UC Berkeley’s Greek Theatre this summer. Perennially attracting some of music’s finest to grace its stage, the Greek’s 2026 slate includes two nights with the one and only Bob Dylan (June 13–14), an evening with Talking Heads frontman David Byrne (Aug. 25), and a concert from iconic singer-songwriter Tori Amos (Aug. 29).
