New Exhibition at Filoli Celebrates Art, History and the Meaning of Home

This summer, Filoli invites visitors to experience the estate in an entirely new way with Creating Home, an immersive exhibition that explores the many meanings of shelter, belonging and connection.

Fioli - Creating Home - Kids, Plants, Trees

The estate-wide experience transforms Filoli’s Gardens, historic House, redwood groves, and Natural Lands into a journey of discovery inspired by the people, wildlife, and landscapes that call the property home. At its center is a striking new installation by California artist Jayson Fann, whose monumental nest-like sculptures emerge from the Redwoods like natural extensions of the landscape itself. Crafted from naturally found wood and organic materials, the structures invite visitors to step inside and consider the ways all living things create places of refuge, care and community.

Throughout the estate guests will encounter stories that reveal Filoli’s many layers. Inside the historic House, immersive vignettes and interactive experiences highlight the lives of the staff who helped shape Filoli into a home, while interpretive elements across the Gardens and trails illuminate the trees, wildlife, and ecosystems that thrive beyond the estate’s formal landscapes.

Designed to engage visitors of every age, Creating Home combines art, history and nature with hands-on opportunities for exploration and reflection. Daily talks, family activities and interactive storytelling encourage guests to look more closely at the world around them — and at the places and people that make them feel at home.

Launching alongside Filoli’s Kids Go Free summer promotion, the exhibition is designed for repeat discovery, offering families new reasons to return throughout the season. The result is an experience that feels both deeply personal and distinctly Northern Californian: a celebration of the connections that bind us to one another, to nature and to the places we cherish.
