Friday Nights at the de Young

There’s a lot of competition for your attention on Friday nights, and a lot of pressure, too. After a week of work there of lots of expectations placed on the eve that kicks off the weekend. Don’t stay in — you don’t want to be going through all the stages of FOMO eating ice cream on your couch watching old episodes of The Office while your friend is taking backstage videos at a concert. But if you do go out, don’t go too hard — you don’t want to be out of commission on Saturday. Also don’t spend too much, still two more days of activities. All of it is hard to manage. Fortunately, there’s a way to almost get it all at the de Young.

Friday Nights at the de Young are after-hours art happenings that include a mix of live music, dance and theater performances, film screenings, panel discussions, lectures, artist demonstrations, hands-on art activities and exhibition tours. Local artists conduct drop-in workshops, debut new commissions, display their art in the Kimball Education Gallery, and take part in conversations about the creative process. Additionally, the café offers a prix-fixe menu and specialty cocktails and the Hamon Tower observation level is open until 8 pm. And perhaps most importantly, programming and general admission to the permanent collection galleries are free to attend! Also, this is the last weekend to check out the Summer of Love exhibition, and while admission to the special exhibit is extra, since the museum entry is free it’s still a great deal.

When: Friday, August 18 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Golden Gate Park
50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive
San Francisco, CA 94118
