On June 21, Marin City’s Rocky Graham Park will On June 21, Marin City’s Rocky Graham Park will be more than just a park — it’ll be a place of celebration and vibrant African culture for the ninth annual Marin City Juneteenth Community Festival.

Juneteenth is a federally recognized holiday honoring the ending of slavery in the United States. It’s held on June 19, the anniversary of the final emancipation of enslaved people in Texas a full two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

The tradition of community celebration in Marin City dates back to the 1980s with the annual Jazz and Blues Festival, also held in the summer, that people were later sad to see go. Now, the community is able to celebrate together every year while also honoring the Juneteenth holiday.

“Marin City’s is a legacy festival... the Black community in the United States has been celebrating Juneteenth before it became a holiday,” lead organizer Oshalala Marcus says.

The festival’s theme for this year is Kuumba, the fifth principle of Kwanzaa, which means “creativity” in Swahili. This year, Marcus says, the theme is relevant to more than just art or music. “For the times we’re living in, we have to be creative about how to keep harmony in our families and our country in a time when people are so divided.”

The theme changes every year, but as always there will be local vendors representing African culture in everything from food and fashion to live entertainment.

An opening ceremony at 11 a.m. will kick off the event with time to honor ancestors, sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” — also known as the Black national anthem — and crown the community king and queen. A drum call is an important part of the ceremony too and is symbolic of a heartbeat. “Juneteenth is uniquely an American holiday, so the opening ceremony just grounds the day,” Marcus says.

As a family-forward event, there will also be an area designated for little ones, with supervised childcare and activities.

From its roots as a protest to the present day’s From its roots as a protest to the present day’s monthlong celebration of the LGBTQ community, Pride is a major, rainbow-covered occasion in the Bay Area. Here’s where you can honor Pride Month:

Towns across Marin hold their own Pride events. First up, Novato raises the Pride Flag in front of city hall (June 1), then Mill Valley kicks off a month of events with a party in Depot Plaza (June 7). Sausalito Pride lasts a whole weekend, with a history presentation and “tea dance” in its schedule (June 20–22). And San Rafael’s Pride Art Walk fills pride in the windows of downtown businesses all month long.

For film buffs, there’s the San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival (June 18–28) and the third-annual Pride at the Rafael by CAFILM (June 13–15). You can also hear about poet Elsa Gidlow at Samuel P. Taylor for a pride-themed California State Parks Week event (June 13), or listen to a panel discussion about grandparenting transgender individuals at Fairfax library (June 5).

Wine Country gets in on the fun too, with Sonoma County Pride happening at Santa Rosa’s Courthouse Square (May 30–June 1), and Gay Wine Weekend lies on the horizon in mid-summer (July 18–20).

San Francisco is packed with events all month, like the Giants’ Pride Day at Oracle Park (June 7) and the SF Gay Men’s Chorus concert at Curran Theatre (June 21). Free activities abound, like the Yerba Buena Gardens’ Pride festival (June 28), a themed show at the Golden Gate Bandshell (June 22) and — of course — the 55th annual Pride parade (June 29).
