View from Mt. Tam

Gnoss Field, Marin County’s airport, sits just off the freeway on the north end of Novato, seen by passing motorists as a curious collection of distant buildings and an occasional plane landing or taking off. But for more than 50 years, Gnoss has provided a home field to local pilots of all stripes—amateurs, pros and the occasional aviation adventurer. We spent a few days at Gnoss and returned with two features—“The Flight Brigade,” the story of the field and its pilots; and Fall Fashion, a pictorial that we hope makes your sartorial senses soar.

Somer Flaherty, our departments editor, had a busy month. Not only did she ride herd on the fashion photo shoot, she also pulled together packages this month on gold jewelry (Fashion Trends) and back-to-school style and clothes (FYI Decor and FYI Kids).

There’s another 50th anniversary this year—Hawaiian  statehood—and Mimi Towle joins the celebration with “Marin Mo’olelo” in GO, an entertaining scrapbook of vintage photos featuring the Hawaiian memories of locals with aloha connections, including Supervisor Hal Brown, conservationist Dr. Marty Griffin of Tiburon, and our own regular contributor P. J. Bremier (whose Home story this month, “Mind Over Meter,” takes you inside an engineer’s “off-the- charts” green home in Tiburon).

Also in this issue, in FYI Education, Tim Porter brings the school financing picture down to the cost of a single student; Conversation discusses the future with Marin collegians Adam Joseph and Tatiana Huezo; FYI Community reports on Project Grace, a Sausalito program that helps families cope with grief; Life Style highlights Tiburon architect Christina Hansen; and Microclimate visits the leafy streets of San Anselmo.

As always, our wish is for your good reading. Enjoy Marin Magazine, as we continue to celebrate this extraordinary place!
