I recently read a very disturbing article that addressed how humans were transforming the Earth’s natural landscape so dramatically that as many as one million plant and animal species are now at risk of extinction. A recent report compiled by the United Nations which called on hundreds of international experts concluded that the actions of humans – farming, logging, poaching, fishing, and mining – posed such a dire threat to ecosystems all over the world that we were altering and damaging our natural world at a rate “unprecedented in human history.”
As a California native, growing up surfing along the coast from San Diego to NorCal, and a resident of Marin County, I feel a personal connection to our oceans and natural landscapes. As a parent I feel a tremendous responsibility to make sure my children and future grandchildren have a clean and bountiful environment. And I believe that we are all responsible for preserving our environment for our own health and that of future generations, and we must consider the impact of our actions in all that we do.
The Marine Mammal Center is leading the field in ocean conservation through marine mammal rescue, veterinary science, and education. There are many ways to get involved, from volunteering to donating to help further their cause. Our firm, Private Ocean Wealth Management, has partnered with The Center to help raise awareness and offer information on how you and your family can get educated about the state of our oceans and make a difference. We take pride in holding several special events each year that are hands-on and allow people to experience for themselves the joy of seeing rehabilitated marine mammal “patients” returned to the wild.
